Zombie Frontier 3

Zombie Frontier 3 is a first person shooter that takes place in the wake of a zombie infestation, and it's been built from the ground up to suit the unique control schemes and eccentricities of mobile devices. While it can't hold its own with triple A console shooters like Battlefield or Call of Duty, it's a respectable entry in the genre that manages to stay relevant with a steady stream of updates, patches, and seasonal content. If you're looking for a shooter that will keep you engaged for the long haul, Zombie Frontier 3 may be just the fit for you.

You shouldn't come to this game expecting something that reinvents the wheel for mobile shooters or manages to replicate the sort of maneuverability you'd find in a PC or console shooter. The experience is largely on rails, and your character sits in a static position. it's more a shooting gallery than a tactical shooter, and it doesn't incorporate the limited movement options or cover-based shooting that other entries in the mobile genre have brought to the table in recent years. But this limited movement system has allowed the developer to focus on a smaller move set and create pretty responsive controls. You can aim and look around by just dragging your finger across the screen, and a trio of buttons on the right side of the screen allow you to shoot, reload, or look down your sights. It's pretty standard stuff for the genre, but it's also generally well executed. Players additionally have access to grenades and an adrenaline system, but use of these is limited, so there's an additional layer of strategy in regards to when you choose to use them.

Also adding a dimension of strategy is the impressively expansive selection of weapons you have to choose from. The standard assortment of pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, and shotguns are all here, but there are multiple models of each with their own unique statistics. Further enhancing the experience are a variety of customization options. Parts like stocks, muzzles, magazines, and bullets can all be upgraded individually on each weapon, giving you the option to play the way you want.

There's a lot of content to dig through here as well. The story campaign consists of over a hundred different levels, and they're diverse in their environmental designs. This is a very pretty game that manages to handle huge waves of zombies without slowdown. You'll of course spend most of the game taking down hordes of the undead, and lining up head shots is the most effective way to succeed, but the various missions sometimes add new wrinkles to the formula. More conventional levels are intermittently peppered with escort missions and endurance waves where you have to conserve your ammo and survive for a given period of time.
